Research Project

The project ERS.T-NRW (Electric Road System Test Field North Rhine-Westphalia) sets new standards for the development and integration of inductive charging systems in NRW. The goal is to develop an interoperable, dynamic charging infrastructure for electric vehicles that enables both stationary and dynamic charging. This will make a significant contribution to achieving the climate goals of the EU Green Deal and the mobility strategy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

By combining cutting-edge energy and communication technologies, the project aims to create a system that provides an intelligent, demand-oriented, and grid-stabilizing charging infrastructure—without requiring additional land use. The project specifically addresses the challenges of high traffic and population density in NRW and leverages the potential of contactless charging solutions for low-emission and space-efficient electrification of transport.

The focus lies on developing a standardized, cross-manufacturer system capable of supplying various vehicle types—from passenger cars to trucks—with energy in an interoperable and safe manner. Communication between the vehicle and the infrastructure enables smart energy flow management, protects the battery, and optimizes grid utilization at the same time.

A consortium of industry, research institutions, and vehicle manufacturers—all based in NRW—develops the technological and regulatory foundations for this purpose and prepares the results for long-term integration into standardization bodies. In doing so, ERS.T-NRW not only strengthens North Rhine-Westphalia as an industrial and innovation hub, but also lays the foundation for sustainable, connected electromobility in Europe.
